Parties That Cooks June Cookbook Club Photo Recap: Elote Cafe

It is no longer June. Nor is it July. Nonetheless, we want to share our recap of Junes Cookbook Club! This month it was Kelles turn to select a book, and she chose to feature the Elote Cafe Cookbook, one of her favorite books from a fantastic spot in Sedona, Arizona.

Taking our cue from the Summer Photo Contest currently in the voting stage, weve compiled the best food photos from our delicious lunch! Sadly, we were missing quite a few of our heavy-hitters, but this left us with a refreshingly light cookbook club meeting (so rare to not leave in a food coma!). Not to mention, we still had a dessert!!

Parties That Cook Will Start Your Cravings for San Franciscos Street Food Festival 2012

Its almost here! What could be considered a foodies paradise is now just around the corner. As if we San Francisco kids havent been spoiled enough by the delicious edible options at Outside Lands, the 4th Annual San Francisco Street Food Festival will be taking over the Mission on Saturday, August 18. Finally.

As Im sure weve mentioned before, this festival is hosted by La Cocina, a business incubator set out to help low-income entrepreneurs, primarily on women from culturally diverse and immigrant communities, launch and grow their food-related businesses. (Fun fact: We host our Mouthwatering Mission class in their shared commercial kitchen!) La Cocina also offers business services to help set these entrepreneurs up for success and make them self-sufficient.

Get excited: Over 80 vendors are expected, and about half of them are from La Cocinas incubator program. With such a tantalizing list of vendors, you better believe some of us PTC gals will be in attendance!

Thats kind of a lot of food for one person in one day, so we recommend planning your attack in advance. Heres a handy map of where vendors will be set up. The festival is scheduled from 11am 7pm, giving you the opportunity to squeeze in all 3 meals walking around between meals is probably a good idea.

Insider tip: Buy a Passport to the festival! While these handy vouchers wont help the lines, they will help you avoid dealing with cash. There are a few tiers available, and the more you buy, the more you save. Good to know: You dont actually have to use the entire passport value yourself. Bring friends or family and split the cost of food and drinks!

Dont want it all to end? Check out the 2-day conference following the festivities. Thats right, the conference runs Sunday and Monday, with tasty brunch options available and loads of learning points to walk away with.

Summers finally here! Parties That Cook is so excited to pull out our grills and host a barbecue (or ten)! Parties That Cooks Summer Sweets Round-Up: Chicagos Best Creameries

San Francisco is cool, but right now, Chicago is HOT! We know its been a while, so we thought its time for another great guest postfrom Parties That Cooks awesome Chicago team. City manager, Brandy, take it away:

Its been one of the hottest Chicago Junes on record so bring on the ice cream, gelato and custard! I polled our lead chefs to see where they go to cool off and enjoy some sweet treats.

When Chef David isnt working at Girl & The Goat, he gets his fix at Black Dog Gelato. They offer a great selection of out-of-the-ordinary flavors like goat cheese+caramel+cashews or brown butter+bourbon. He also loves Black Dog because its truly a home grown Chicagobusiness.

Chef Liz, our chef in the burbs, raves about All Chocolate Kitchen in Geneva. According to Liz, they have the best Gelato outside of Italy! I dont doubt her All Chocolate Kitchens gelato is made fresh everyday using natural and artisan ingredients. Swing by for a taste of Stracciatella, vanilla with chocolate traces, Pistachio from the region of Bronte, or a sweet Passionfruit. Yum!

Chef Heidis favorite spot, Ollies Frozen Custard,is close to her hometown in DeKalb. She used to go with her parents and now brings her children! Heidis pick for the best menu item is Black Raspberry Custard, but you have to go on Saturday to get that famous flavor. If youre a chocolate lover, the Turtle Sundae is TDF (high five for anyone who correctly guesses that acronym). All summer long, the custard is served up by local high school students to a long, winding line of dedicated patrons. They tough it out even while being attacked by relentlessmosquitoes! City dwellers who make the journey: If you cant get enough of Ollies on the spot, theyll pack a quart on ice to take home!

My favorite spot is the famous Margies Candies. My parents took me there as a kid after White Sox games, and the whole family would share one of their Jumbo Creations. Oh, memories of the Turtle Tummy Buster Five scoops of Margies Famous Ice Cream and a Turtle on top. Over the top? Yes. Worth the 30 minutes wait? Yes. Delish? Oh, yes! I even hear the joint has been visited by Al Capone, and after performing at Comiskey Park,The Beatles dropped by with dates and enjoyed Margies Atomic Buster Sundaes a fruit and fudge delight. Nice choice, fellas.

Parties That Cooks Top Ten Summer Entre Recipes: The Grilling Season

Now that youve read (and maybe even cooked your way through) Parties That CooksTop Ten Summer Appetizers, we thought wed provide some great entre recipes to give your grill a work out. Parties That Cooks Seattle Event Recap: Corporate Cooking Competition

Happy Friday! For this corporate team building event recap, we thought wed bring you the story from a different angle. Now, Carolyn takes it away with her first-hand report, all the way from Portland! (Or was it Seattle..?)

We, at Parties That Cook, love a challenge, especially when it involves cooking. So when Bri O., the host of a recent Seattle Microsoft event, requested that we turn their Sumptuous Small Plates dinner into a competition, we excitedly replied, Absolutely!

Before long, our team had the 6 cooking stations set up. We welcomed our guests with an antipasti platter and beverages. As guests put on their aprons, they quickly realized that they were about to face off in a cooking competition. Which team would make the best dish using Parties That Cooks recipes? Only time would tell.

Excitement mounted as I explained how the competition would unfold, demonstrating tips and tricks that would come in handy in their cooking and providing suggestions on how to win (best execution, presentation, bribe, etc.)!

Soon enough, guests were assigned to their teams, had washed their hands, and the cooking had begun! While our inspiring Kitchen Challenge playlist pumped out rockin tunes, the PTC chefs circulated through the room making sure everyone was having fun and learning new cooking techniques. Our Server, Elizabeth, captured action shots of the guests while they cooked (to be emailed to them the following day), and made sure everyone was staying hydrated.

Delicious cooking aromas filled the air, and a few staff members at the venue, 415 Westlake, poked their heads in to see what all the excitement was about! One team made fresh Burrata, a delicious creamy version of mozzarella, on Grilled Bread, while another creatively executed mini Philly Cheese Steaks with Gruyere Cheese Sauce (yum!). There were also Little Fish Tacos with Chipotle-Lime Crema, Lettuce Cups with Minced Gingered Chicken and Hoisin, Shiitake-Scallion Potstickers, and Ahi Tuna Tartare in Toasted Won Ton Cups.

After an hour, the clock stopped and teams artfully plated their dishes for the presentation table. Each team chose their most charismatic member to present their dish and argue why they think they should win. After the presentations, guests were invited to enjoy their own helping of Small Plates. The room was quickly filled with the sounds of Mmmm.

Meanwhile, the chefs tasted, analyzed and critiqued each teams dish back in the kitchen. The tension was high as the guests wondered how their dish scored. Like always, it was a difficult decision to make. Everyone did an excellent job, but a winner had to be chosen. Ultimately, it came down to the Philly Cheese Steak Team! They executed the recipe very well, worked together when troubleshooting how to get the right sauce consistency, plated up their dish beautifully, and made a second platter with additional toasted bread and cheese sauce (who doesnt extra love bread and deliciously melted cheese sauce??). Congratulations, Philly Cheese Steak Team!

Each team member was awarded one of our More Sumptuous Small Plates Recipe Decks containing 30 of our favorite recipes, easy-to-read and all in one little box. There are even photos on the cards to show you how the dish will look!

Parties That Cooks Bay Adventure with Community Spice Company and Womens Initiative

Remember that Womens Initiative fundraiser we hosted earlier this year? Bibbys parents were in attendance, visiting from Chicago with their friend Grace. Grace was looking to donate to this amazing cause when she found the marketplace featuring the goods of6 Womens Initiative graduates. She came across Janis Callons Community Spice Company booth. Community Spice Company (CSC) donates a portion of every sale to a local charity of your choice (what an amazing business model!). At the event, Janis had a beautiful basket of a variety of exotic spices on display. Grace saw the basket and immediately wanted to buy it.

When Janis politely informed Grace that the basket was not for sale, Grace prodded a bit and asked, Well if it were for sale, how much would you want?Janis replied, $350, already thinking her asking price might discourage the sale.Grace immediately came back with a $1,000 offer. (Wow, talk about a hard sell!)Janis decided to up the ante and countered with $1,050. SOLD.

Needless to say, Janis was ecstatic! So grateful for the gesture, she later offered to take Bibby, Lori Jensen (soon-to-be WImentor), Barbara Russo (WI Supporter),Julie Castro Abrams (CEO of Womens Initiative) and Julies parents out on her boat. They met at a boat slip and sailed over to Friday Nights Jazz By The Bay in Sausalito where they enjoyed delicious dinner, music by Rolando Morales, and great company including an adorable pooch in a life jacket. Safety first!

Janis whipped up a few mouthwatering dishes for her guests using her spices and rubs. One of the groups favorites were the grilled yams coated in CSCs tale Gator blend.

While we cant give you the secret recipe for the tale Gator Blend (sorry!), we can give you a few tips that Janis shared for how to make her super simple, yet incredibly tasty yams on the grill.

The yams were simply sliced crosswise into 1/3 thick medallions, tossed with a little oil and grilled for 10 minutes on each side. They were then removed, drizzled with a few drops of olive oil, sprinkled with Tale Gator Blend and covered to rest.This is a great low calorie, all natural carb with a soft, inviting, nutty caramelized taste. (Serving portions per person are 1/2 yam).

After dinner, the boat excursion, and watching the sun set, Bibby was not done! To end the night, she met up with some friends at Copita, which is owned by her mentor, Joanne Weir. Located in the heart of downtown Sausalito, Copita serves up lunch and dinner daily in the dining room, bar, and lovely outdoor patio.

Talk about an amazing night! It just goes to show, those who are kind will be rewarded in food!

Parties That Cooks Fourth of July Potluck Recipes

Earlier this summer, I promised to give you all 2 tastytried-and-true recipes. Bibby has graciously provided her moms recipe for Oven Sandwiches Hey, not everyone has access to a barbecue! Then, we stole the killer recipe for Spicy Buffalo Chicken Dip. YUM. You sure have a delicious Fourth ahead of you.

Oven Sandwiches
Ingredients:
1 stick soft unsalted butter
1 Tablespoon poppy seeds
1 Tablespoon onions, minced
2 Tablespoons mustard
8 hotdog buns
1/2 pound sliced ham or enough for 2 slices a sandwich
1/2 pound sliced swiss cheese or enough for 2 slices a sandwich

Methods/Steps:
-Preheat the oven to 350
-Mix butter, mustard, poppy seeds and onions together. Spread mixture on buns.
-Put 2 strips of ham and 2 of cheese in each bun.
-Wrap in foil. Warm the sandwiches for 15 minutes at 350 degrees.

And voila! Youre done!

Spicy Buffalo Chicken Dip
Ingredients:
3/4 lb 1 lb. chicken breast, cooked
8 oz. low fat cream cheese (or full fatwhatever, ;))
1/2 c. (more or less to your taste) Buffalo SauceWe recmmend Crystal Louisanas hot sauce
1/2 c. low fat sour cream
1 tsp. Ranch packet seasoning
2 oz. (1/2 c. shredded) 2% cheddar cheese, shredded
*bleu cheese crumbles optional/to taste (Might only use a couple Tbsp)
salt and pepper to taste

Methods/Steps:
-Finely dice chicken (or pulse in a food processor for a smoother dip). Set aside in a bowl.
-In a food processor, mix cream cheese, sour cream, and ranch seasoning until smoothadding the hot sauce gradually to thin it out.
-Fold into chicken.
-Add shredded/crumbled cheese to taste. Adjust as necessary.
-Bake until bubbly.
-Enjoy!

If youre looking for a fresh and crisp recipe, look no further. This refreshing watermelon salad is packed with our favorite summer flavors like lime, cilantro, and ricotta salata.Try it out at your next backyard bash or lazy weekend afternoon. And hey while youre savoring this versatile salad as a side dish or entree for lunch or dinner, it might just feel like the beginning of June. Who wouldnt want to turn back time?

Salad of Watermelon and Watercress with Ricotta Salata and Pine Nuts

Ingredients

Dressing:
2 Tablespoons lime juice
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Salad:
6 cups seedless watermelon, cubed into 1-inch squares, rind discarded
1/4 cup red onion slices
1/2 cup green olives (like Picholine), seeded and coarsely chopped
1/2 cup cilantro leaves
1 bunch watercress
1/3 cup pine nuts, toasted
4 ounces ricotta salata cheese (can substitute feta)

Methods/Steps
Dressing: Using a whisk, mix lime juice, olive oil and kosher salt together.

Salad: Combine watermelon, red onion slices, olives, cilantro and watercress. Drizzle with half of the dressing and gently toss. Transfer salad to salad plates. Garnish with pine nuts, ricotta salata and serve immediately.

Parties That Cooks Top Lunch Spots in Dogpatch

Here at Parties That Cook, its not all parties and cooking. We also love to eat (who would have guessed?). We actually have some pretty amazing chefs in our office, but sometimes we put them to work for cookbook club just like to pick something up from around the neighborhood, Dogpatch.The area is chock full of a variety great restaurants!

One of our favorite spots for lunch is Sunflower, a (technically) Potrero HillVietnamese restaurant with a second location in the Mission. Its a short walk from our office -gotta love those hills!-and we find ourselves ordering for pick-up often. They offer a mix of deliciously spicy and completelybenigndishes that we just cant get enough of. The only catch is that they close at 2pm, so make sure to grab lunch early!

A few short steps from our office is The Sandwhich Shop. Cheap, delicious sandwiches with fresh ingredients get there early because they tend to run out! Our intern and likely their best customer, Alaina, frequents the little shop (by frequent, we mean every day) and always comes back with Smoked Turkey on Sesame. Her sandwich comes stuffed with smoked turkey, cheese, lettuce, pickles, onions, tomatoes, banana peppers, jalapeos, mustard, and mayonnaise. Talk about made-to-order!

Another one of our favorite lunch joints is The New Spot, a Mexican and Salvadorian restaurant just off of 3rd Street. They have a great menu with large, inexpensive portions. (Who doesnt love leftovers?) We definitely recommend the seasonal, daily specials YUM. Also, be sure to try the Super Nachos, which you should probably can easily split with someone else. These bad boys come complete with your choice of meat, beans, jalapeos, two types of cheese, sour cream, Pico de gallo, guacamole, and (of course) fresh chips.

We also love Piccino restaurant, housed in a newly rennovated yellow building on 22nd and Minnesota. Just a hop, skip and a jump from our office, Piccino offers a simple, seasonal menu with exceptional ingredients. In a bit of a hurry? Check out Piccinos coffee barfacing 22nd, where you can place your order from the restaurant to-go. Either way, make sure youve got some time to kill (this place gets hoppin!). In addition to the delicious soups, salads, pizza, and more, they have some amazing melt-in-your-mouth desserts! (Cookie run, anyone??)

Finally, we haveKitchenette, located where 21st and Illinois would be. Their delicious organic meals change daily, but be sure to arrive early enough to snag neighborhood favorites like Dogpatch Millionaire known to sell out! If youre looking for a different place to eat, than youve come to the right garage no tables or chairs here! Kitchenette is run out of a loading dock, and you eat right in the warehouse. Whos up for a lunch-time adventure?

Parties That Cooks Summer Photo Contest: Voting Begins August 1st!

The time has come. At the end of today, July will be over. While the thought may bring a tear to your eye, now is not the time to be sad. On the contrary, my friends. We should look back at July and cherish the fond memories of all our hands-on cooking parties.

To help ourselves you do just that, weve devised a new contest launching tomorrow! Just in time. On August 1st, we invite you to check out this page, click on any photo, and scroll through a slideshow of photos from each July cooking party and corporate team building event. When youve selected a favorite, click the button under the photo and then VOTE. Youll be helping that team (anyone who attended that event) get one step closer to a sweet prize: a Parties That Cook edible care package! Hand-delivered and valued at $300, this tasty reward will go to the attendees of the event whose photo gets the most votes by 5pm on August 8th.
